Team Member Spotlight
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Andrew Collard has a Bachelors of Science in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Yale University, where he also captained the Heavyweight Crew team. At Back Bay, Andrew has worked on a broad range of assignments, including academic-industry collaboration, orphan drug development and franchise expansion strategy.
Prior to joining Back Bay, Andrew worked as an Assistant Scientist at Myriant Technologies, where he earned a patent for mutations beneficial to bio-based chemical production.
S. Peter Bak, PhD
Dr. S. Peter Bak joined Back Bay from MIT, where he held an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Koch Institute of Integrative Cancer Research. At MIT, Peter focused on the development of immunotherapies for prostate cancer, and led projects with researchers from the departments of Biological and Chemical Engineering. Prior to MIT, Peter earned his Ph.D. from Dartmouth Medical School in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, where his research uncovered novel pathways of immunosuppression in ovarian cancer.
Peter brings 10 plus years of cellular, molecular and biochemical research experience in the fields of immunology, infection and oncology. Peter holds a degree in Biology, magna cum laude, from The College of the Holy Cross.
Susan Thompson, PhD
Dr. Susan Thompson joined Back Bay from the Biomedical Engineering PhD program at Johns Hopkins University. As a graduate student, Susan managed multiple collaborations across the schools of engineering, medicine and physics to generate supporting data for a novel mechanoelectric coupling hypothesis that quickly gained traction in her field of cardiac electrophysiology. She is also the CEO and founder of a start-up company centered on her innovative idea for a consumer medical device. She has raised significant funds through individual angels, crowdfunding and a phase I SBIR grant and managed prototype development, IP generation and clinical trial execution. Susan was named as one of the “2016 Medtech Boston 40 Under 40 Healthcare Innovators.”
Susan holds a PhD in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in mechanical engineering from University of Maryland, College Park.
Chief Marketing Officer
Mr. Jeff Whitney comes to Back Bay with over 20 years of experience as a CMO for emerging and high-growth professional services and technology companies. Jeff’s accomplishments include: restarting Servicesoft, where he was instrumental in growing revenues from $4m to $50 million in just two years, leading to a $651 million acquisition; and helping Bluestone Consulting double in size and achieve Inc. 500 most rapidly growing private company status two years in a row before, as a founding employee, spinning off Bluestone Software, which ultimately reached a $1.5 billion marketing cap. Jeff also served as the CMO for Beacon-Worldwide, a sales and marketing consulting company. Jeff has a BS in Math from Westminster College.
